Start with preservation

Protect the note before chasing its value

Condition matters. Handle notes with clean, dry hands, hold them by the edges, and move them into archival storage as soon as possible. A safe holder costs far less than damage caused by improper materials.

Use currency-size, PVC-free sleeves or rigid archival holders. Store notes flat, dry, and away from direct sunlight.

Inspect

Use neutral lighting and modest magnification. Look for folds, edge damage, stains, writing, and printing details without altering the note.

Document

Photograph both sides, record the complete serial and printing facility, then save the note in My Notes for monitoring.

Photograph a note in four steps

Scan a note
  1. Use a plain, dark background.Keep the full note visible with space around every edge.
  2. Use even light.Avoid glare, deep shadows, and direct flash.
  3. Hold the camera parallel.Do not crop or tilt the serial-number area.
  4. Review before submitting.Confirm the B, eight digits, star, and printing facility are sharp.
